When the night time comes along…you must whip it! Whip around good!
You know the feeling all too well…It’s been a long day, you have finally tucked your kids in after an exhausting struggle with dinner bath and bed and now all you want to do is pop your PJ’s on and sink into the couch with a cup of tea and Netflix…. well STOP!
Yes you! Back away from the kettle and put the remote control down!
School holidays are over girlfriend! Time to get your butt out of holiday mode and enter back into the reality of real life!
Every night before you allow yourself the luxury of couch sitting and channel surfing I recommend doing a “whip around” which I have found lowers my “I cannot relax in a messy house” anxiety levels and assists in having a fresh start in the morning instead of trying to prepare the kids breakfast whilst still trying to catch up from the day before.
So, the following should take you no more than 15-20mins (I whip fast baby!) and this is what I do…
PICK UP TOYS
By the end of the day they are everywhere! All over the lounge room, on the couch, in the kitchen, up the hallway… So, I scoop them all up and pop them back into their spots in the play area. Back on the shelf, back in their boxes etc etc…
PICK UP TOWELS
Next I go to the bathroom and tidy up from bath time. I pick up the towels and hang them, I peel the non slip mat off the bottom of the bath and hang over the edge of the bath (lets it dry properly to stop mould) and, if it’s particularly tooth pastey and beard trim hairy I grab a flushable bathroom wipe from the cupboard under the sink and give the sink area a quick once over.
PUT A LOAD OF WASHING ON
My laundry is right next to my bathroom so naturally this is the next place I head in my whip around to pop a load of washing on. Depending on what day it is depends on what colour I put on. If hubby has a cricket game or training the next day I will do whites, if Lenny has kinder or there is an excessive amount of dark colours in the dirty basket I will do darks. I pop the machine on and forget about it until the morning.
LOAD THE DISHWASHER
Urgh….tedious I know, but trust me, clean kitchen = clean mind! So you can relax! I load EVERYTHING! Pots, pans, plastics! I’m not one to exclude! I hate washing up so I stuff my dishwasher with anything and everything that will fit, pop the tablet in and start her up, which leads me to my next job…
WIPE THE BENCHES
Grab your spray bottle and your chux and wipe down your bench tops! Try not to forget the stove top and kitchen sink. Giving the bench a quick wipe down now will not only leave your kitchen looking fresh but it will be a welcome sight in the morning as you make the kids Weetbix and start the school lunches on a clean surface.
Then…RELAX! Pop your PJ’s and the kettle on and sink into the couch…or, if it’s a nice night, go for a walk around the block, lie in bed with a good book or just look up from your phone and chat to your partner (!) Once my whip around is complete, the rest of the night is open for me! It’s my time to switch off and unwind.
You might choose to do more jobs within the whip around (making school lunches, packing bags etc…) but at a minimum, completing the above mentioned tasks will make your morning easier and your night guilt free.
Whip it baby….whip it good!
