I once read a meme that said “You know you’re a new mum when you hop into the shower and you literally can’t remember the last time you had a shower!” Ummm… guilty! Since Hazel has arrived life has become just that little bit more chaotic! With three kids to now look after I am finding it harder and harder to find time to do things for myself, hence our May is for me campaign.
My life is now this busy whirlwind of school, kinder, cleaning, cooking, shopping, blogging, feeding and sleeping (Hazel that is, because I’m definitely not getting any sleep around here at the moment!). The thing is though, our lives just seem to work, we are (usually!) in the right place at the right time and the kids are (usually!) fed, bathed and in bed by 8pm each night.
This miracle of organisation however is not due to good luck, it’s due to routine. Something that we as a family try and be extremely diligent with. My kids like routine, they thrive on it and the minute we come off the routine… well, all hell breaks loose! It’s funny though, since becoming a mum, I have become extra strict with my kids being on a routine but as for myself – and back to the meme about not remembering when I last showered – I now lack a personal routine in every way possible!
Ok, I shower! Let’s just get that straight! It might not be until the end when the kids are in bed, but yes, I do shower! As for other personal regimes such as hair care, make up and skin care, well they are pretty much nonexistent! Most days I’m lucky to slap on some BB cream and a thin coat of mascara!
Skin care though is really important to me and something that I want to put back on the high priority list. The importance of a good skin care routine is something that my Nana and Mum have installed on me from a young age, look after your skin and you will naturally preserve one’s youth!
Where do you start though? With so many different products available on the market it can be quite overwhelming to know which products are going to work for you and your skin. This is why it was a welcome relief when QV Skincare reached out to us a few weeks back to see if we would like to trial some of their products. Ummm… yes please! Nothing like having a decision of where to start made for you!
Australian made and owned, QV is a brand I was already familiar with and have used in the past. They have over 50 different products in their range for adults, kids and babies and the best thing is, they cater for all skin types from sensitive to normal, dry to very dry and eczema/dermatitis.
I have a normal skin type and the products I have been trialing over the past few weeks have worked really well on my skin. They don’t leave me looking shiny and they definitely have a nice weightlessness about them, which is great because, for me, there’s nothing worse than popping on a moisturiser that makes you feel like your face is heavily coated in cream.
I have been using the QV Face Gentle Cleanser in the shower and it has been leaving my skin feeling clean without being squeaky and stiff. This is good if I’m in a dash and forget to apply moisturiser because I don’t feel dry. I usually use a face wash with a little exfoliater in it but I have been enjoying this cleanser for a change and have noticed that my skin looks really fresh after each wash.
Now, washing your face in the shower isn’t exactly getting back into a skin care routine because that comes part and parcel with every day hygiene, so it’s the moisturising and time after the shower that I have been making an effort to get back into. QV has a new facial moisturiser called QV Face Ultra Calming Moisturiser which promises to hydrate the skin for 24 hours, reduce discomfort and help calm and soothe.
After using it for the past couple of weeks now, I can honestly say I am impressed with this cream. It absorbs into my skin really well and is not greasy at all so perfect to wear under BB creams and foundations. It’s not shiny and it’s reasonably priced at approx $15 a bottle. There is one negative for me though and that is it doesn’t contain SPF 15+ which is something I usually look for in a daily moisturiser. This can work ok though if I use as a base coat and pop my BB cream, which contains SPF 15+ straight over the top. I may consider using something different in Summer though such as QV’s Moisturising Day Cream with SPF 30+ as I am prone to freckles big time during the warmer months!
Another product I have been trialing is the QV Face Revitalising Eye Cream which is said to visibly reduce dark circles, fine lines and puffiness – pretty much every tell tale sign that I am a mother of three! I can’t say that I had massive dark circles around my eyes before I started using this product but I have noticed that my eyes do appear less puffy after a bad night’s sleep and, let’s face it, there are plenty of those happening at the moment! So, I pop the eye cream on under my eyes before using the facial moisturiser and compliment the “wake up looking fresh” look with an extra strong coffee!
One product that I haven’t really used in the past but have enjoyed trialing over the past few weeks has been the QV Face Nurturing Night Cream. A sucker for names, any product that says it’s going to nurture me while I’m asleep is amazing in my eyes! The reason I haven’t really used night creams in the past is because I have always showered in the morning and then gone to bed at night without washing my face (I know, big no no!) But since I have now been showering most days at night, I have been washing my face and then popping this cream on before going to bed.
Yes, it is thicker than a normal moisturizer and on first use, can feel a little heavy on the skin but it definitely doesn’t feel claggy or suffocating and although I might not be getting much sleep at the moment, I do wake up with nice feeling skin, even if the rest of my mind and body doesn’t quite catch up until after some morning caffeine!
All of the photos in this blog are 100% untouched and make up free. Would I usually post photos without at least a little bit of BB cream, lip gloss or masacara? No. But I am currently proud of my skin, I think it’s looking really nice. For me, putting a little effort into my routine again, a dab of eye cream, calming moisturiser in the morning and a good wash and application of nurturing cream at night has made me feel like I am finally doing something for myself again and it hasn’t been a huge effort!
Now, all I need to do is find the time to touch up my roots, tint my eyebrows and shave my legs and I’ll be super model ready in no time!
