Working mama away again…this week I’m in Sydney for Stadium Stomp SCG. It might sound glamorous but event life can be hard work!
We have early mornings (like really early) on event day, we can be up and onsite by 3.30am to finish setting up before participants start arriving and this can be after setting up the course until midnight the night before!
We spend days away from our families (my longest was 3 weeks when I travelled to Turkey as one of the event managers of the ANZAC Day Dawn Service)
Coffee soon becomes your best friend to wash down “event” food (such as the meat pie I had for “breakfast” at 9am this morning!) then there’s porta loos, box lifting, table moving, suppliers, contractors and being behind the scenes when everyone else is out the front enjoying themselves (concerts are the worse!).
Don’t get me started on some of the emails we receive from participants/volunteers that contain way too much information (let’s just say I really didn’t need to know about the volunteer who was unable to attend last weekend due to a “tiring night of explosive diarrhoea”) then there’s packing, packing and more packing, bollards, hazard tape and gaffer mixed with living out of your suitcase and the joyous/heart breaking facetimes I have with the kids…
But I can honestly say, I love my job and I wouldn’t swap it for the world (well, only for baby leave!) The good outweighs the bad! I travel with a great team of people my “stomp family” and I thrive off the excitement/pride that watching participants out on our course after months of planning, brings…
Being a working mama definitely makes me a better mama. Yes, it’s hard being away from my hubby and kids but it gives me more patience when I’m at home and the little annoying things don’t seem to bother me as much. Plus seeing the kids little faces when they wake up in the morning and say “mums home!” is just priceless.
So to all the working mamas out there…hats off to you my loves! It’s tough but we are all doing it for our own reasons whether it be money, small biz (#bosslady) or sanity!
I will be finishing up my stomp season soon and then it will be back to school pick ups and dinner making for me (tasks my hubby has been smashing out like a boss while I’ve been away) and I’m seriously ok with that! It’s all about balance and this mama is ready to settle back into home life* and snuggle with my little ones in preparation for baby number three’s impending arrival.
*Ask me again after I’ve been home for a few weeks!
