It’s no secret that we love markets here at Mama loves to share. The hustle and bustle, the tummy rumbling smells of gourmet food vans, the love and care that’s put into handmade goods and our admiration for the stall holders that sit there enthusiastically rain, hail or shine (well, maybe not when it’s hailing!).
We are spoilt for choice here on the Peninsula when it comes to markets and one of our favourites and one of the longest running starting in April 1983, is the Mornington Main Street Market.
Over the years we have strolled up and down this market many times, purchasing gifts and little treats for ourselves. Now, after starting Mama loves to share (which has given us an extra interest in the local community and small business owners) we decided to stop and find out a little more about the faces behind the stalls…
SUE BARKER – HAND MADE BABY GOODS
Located outside Bloom Room, Sue Barker’s hand made baby gifts are just the sweetest, making perfect newborn and baby gifts.
A Mt Martha local, Sue has been attending the market for the past five years. Her product range includes toys, dresses, blankets, cushions and booties.
TELISA COOPER – HINT OF HENNA
Located outside Toy World, Hint of Henna brings a little glam to Main Street with feather hair extensions and henna. Although Hint of Henna is relatively new to the Main Street Market, Telisa has being visiting many different markets with her gorgeous hair extensions and henna designs for a few years now. A Peninsula local, Telisa also caters for hens parties, weddings and all special occasions.
SUE – LIVE WOT U LOVE
A market veteran, Sue from Live Wot U Love used to live on the Mornington Peninsula before recently moving to Pakenham South. Located outside Toy World and formerly known as “The Sign Lady”, Sue’s artistic abilities shine though in her hand drawn signs and ready to hang prints. Sue can also do custom orders for any occasion including weddings and Christmas.
CHERYL WIDLEND – SISTERWORKS
Located outside Red Fox Runs, Cheryl Widlend, originally from South Africa and now a Mt Martha local, has been attending the Mornington Main Street Market for the past three years. An advocate for women’s empowerment, Sisterworks enables the most vulnerable migrant women in our community to work toward financial independence by developing skills they need to settle happily into life in Australia. Sisterworks stall sells the products these women hand made including hats, beanies, pen holders, hand bags and storage bags. If you get a chance, stop by and have a chat with Cheryl, she’s a lovely lady who will happily tell you all about Sisterworks and their inspiring initiatives.
Located outside Michelle-Ann, Katinka Kernutt is also a market newbie, attending for just under a year now. Katinka’s gorgeous hand made designs depict different photos from across the Peninsula and beyond, all showcased as tiny little pictures on earrings, bracelets and coasters. Katinka’s family lives on the Peninsula which is handy as she’s the mother of a 16 month old boy so they are able to mind him when she attends the market. We love mums in small biz!
MIRANDA MOYE – STUDIO87
Located outside Ray White, Miranda has been attending the market for nearly two years now. Residing in Safety Beach, Miranda knows the Peninsula well and produces the most stunning pieces of hand made jewellery, all with a Peninsula feel. Although most of Miranda’s work is done in sterling silver, she also mixes metals with some of her creations being copper and silver or silver and glass.
Located outside Mornington C Lane, Kor Designs sells a beautiful array of hand made homewares including marble swirled concrete tealight holders, bowls, serving platters and jewelry stands. Each piece is lovingly made and truly unique, making for the perfect gift or piece for your own home. Zoe, the stall owner and Kor creator, is a Mt Martha local and has been attending the market since August last year.
The Mornington Main Street Market is on every Wednesday between 9am and 3pm (occasionally weather dependent) visit www.morningtonchamber.com.au/market-day/ for more details.
