This weeks More than a Mama is gorgeous Morn Pen local, Katie Rees. Katie and I have known each other for many years now through our younger days of jazz ballet and tap dancing! So I was super excited when Katie invited me to ‘like’ the page of her new business venture ‘Katie Rees Design” because any sister doing it for themselves who is also juggling being a mama to three little ladies is an inspiration worth chatting to! Katie is now the Owner and Principal Designer at Katie Rees Designs which is dedicated to realising the potential of your property, providing innovative home design solutions – sound interesting?! Read on!
MLTS – Thanks so much for chatting with us Katie! Now, we must start by saying that I, (Helen), have known you for many, many years now, meeting way back in the days of jazz ballet! But for those people that don’t know you, tell us a little about yourself and your family.
Katie – I am very happy wife to Brent, and Mum to 3 amazing little girls, Savannah (6), Addison (5) & Brodie (2). I absolutely love being a Mum, the girls make be smile every day!! My other passion is Home Design. I have been in the building design industry for over 16 years and love to positively influence the way people work and live every day.
MLTS – A mama to three little girls! So that makes four boss ladies in your household right?! Tell us about your business ‘Katie Rees Design’, what inspired you to start your own business?
Katie – A couple of reasons, first and foremost, I wanted to be there for more my girls as much as possible. As they’ve grown older, their schedules have become much more difficult to juggle around structured work hours, and I didn’t want to miss any important life moments. I also wanted to set a wonderful example for them, that if you really want something you should just go for it. Being a Mum is not a hindrance to the process, it is an absolute driver. Secondly, I wanted to help families live in great spaces by sharing my knowledge and experience in the home design industry. I love to design beautiful, functional homes for families, then follow through with the technical detailing to ensure the buildings are carried through seamlessly to completion.
MLTS – Wow, what incredible sentiments for your daughters and such an amazing opportunity being able to work within an industry you’re so passionate about. What are some day to day to day challenges you face with being a mum and a business owner?
Katie – Definitely making sure that you give dedicated time to both. I have scheduled days/times set aside for working when the girls are at school or in care and I make sure that I am 100% focused on my business in those times. When it’s time to be with the girls I make sure to switch off from business mode and give them my undivided love and attention.
MLTS – That’s so important but so hard isn’t it! Good on you for finding that balance. Tell us a little about your work space, how do you find working from home?
Katie – Although we do not have a dedicated study/office. The spaces in our house are very adaptable and what was just moments ago the breakfast bar and dining table, transforms into a desk and work space. I am super organised (much to the ridicule of friends and family at times). It is so important that our family works together as a team to keep the house tidy and orderly so that when it comes time for me to sit down and work, everything is as it should be.
MLTS – Oh we love organisation, we would never ridicule you for that! Speaking of family working together as a team, how important is it to surround yourself with supportive/encouraging people when starting a business?
Katie – It’s extremely important. I have so many wonderfully supportive people in my life, many of whom are small business owner’s themselves and on hand to give guidance and support as needed. I have been completely overwhelmed with the encouragement of everyone in my life, even some strangers, who have congratulated me on taking the leap.
MLTS – That’s so awesome. Life cheerleaders are 100% super important. What does a typical day look like for you? School run, work, cook dinner etc…?
Katie – Well every day is different but in a nutshell: 6am- Group Fitness Class. 7am-9am: Getting everyone ready for the day- Breakie, hair, teeth, bags etc and drop off to school/care. 9am-3pm: Work Time. 3pm-6pm: After school activities (Acro, Dancing, Swimming, Basketball etc.) + cooking dinner. 6pm-7.30pm: Dinner/Family Time, baths + readers. 7.30pm-Bed: Kids to bed, tidy house, prep for next day and usually squeeze in some more work time.
MLTS – We are literally exhausted right now from hearing that but that’s bosslady/mumlife isn’t it! Every minute of the day is accounted for! What about some ‘me’ time? What do you like to do for yourself?
Katie – Me time? What’s that?! Just kidding…! I love attending group fitness classes with my best friend in the mornings, we combine fitness and catching up at the same time. I also love to read, and sneak in at least one chapter of a novel right before bed time!! The rest of my time is mostly accounted for but I’m okay with that, most of my “me” time is spent with my family which is absolutely fine by me.
MLTS – Well we can relate to catching up with your bestie at the gym! It’s definitely a good way to motivate each other! What are your tips for other Mamas who are wanting to start their own business but don’t quite have the confidence to do so?
Katie – Believe in yourself and prepare, as they say ‘Failing to prepare is preparing to fail’. Line up all your ducks and then just go for it!!
MLTS – Great advice, I think as women we just get this overwhelming need to have everything perfect before we commence something but really, at the end of the day we should just believe in ourselves and go for it! So Katie, you grew up on the Mornington Peninsula and still live here now with your lovely family, tell us, what’s your favourite activity to do as a family on the Pen?
Katie – We are so spoilt for choice that it is really difficult to choose! We do love going to Sorrento back beach and exploring the rock pools.
MLTS – A great family activity to do indeed. And finally, what is your favourite quote/motto?
Katie – After watching ‘Wonder’ with Savannah and Addison, I love ‘When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind’.
MLTS: Couldn’t love that more if we tried. Thank you so much for chatting with us Katie. We wish you all the success in the world for your new business and just love your positive vibe and energy.
