I’m the first to admit, when it comes to trying to prevent my family from getting sick, I go a little OTT. Perhaps I’m just a normal, caring mum, perhaps I’m a bit of a germaphobe, whatever my label, all I know is at the first teensy tiny sign of someone being sick in the family and I whip out Mama’s preventative measures, because, well… sick kids… “ain’t nobody got time for dat!”. Why didn’t anyone tell us how many times kids get sick in a year???
Of course, one of my kids bites her nails and one sucks her fingers when she’s tired (go figure) so they are super susceptible to germs! AGH, they may as well just go and wash their hands in a public toilet!! Annabelle, 8, is getting a little better with personal hygiene, washing her hands often and getting out mum’s best friend ‘ye olde’ hand sanitiser, but, she’s a kid so I can’t expect her to be as germ vigilant as her mama, can I?
Penny, 5, on the other hand, whose started Prep this week (yay!), pops her fingers in her gob at the first sign of tiredness. It doesn’t matter if she’s been playing in the sandpit fondling worms, painting with mud, wiping her snotty nose with her knuckles or holding hands with her sick best friend whose just had gastro, you name the gross scenario and guaranteed her hands will have been there and not washed before they go straight in her mouth!
Now that she’s off to school, I fear we are facing possible (ok, this mama’s anxiety is facing it, she’s actually as happy as Larry in life, bless her, and none-the-wiser) catching of new germs and probably a new round of cold and flu rampant through the house and most likely straight to her 16-month-old brother who she likes to kiss… on the mouth.
Which is why I’m taking preventative measures! I’m bringing out my ‘A Game’ for 2019, mama’s! I vowed this year would be the year of good health for us and I’m ‘gunna’ do everything in my power to make that happen! Call me the crazy Supermum Germ Killer if you must, but when it comes to trying to ward off or prevent nasties, I’m taking action. And I’m starting with the germ carrying school kids!
Here’s a few of my cold and flu prevention tips to help the kids and the whole family have a happy, healthy year too;
TIP 1: Pack a mini survival kit in their school bag which includes hand sanitiser, lip balm, sunscreen, bandaids and tissues. Annabelle loves being in charge of her own little medical kit now that she’s 8.
TIP 2: Take Sambucol Immunity Gummies every day – made from antioxidant rich black elderberries, the kids love the flavour and I love that it could help support their immunity all year round because it provides a hit of antioxidants to reduce free radicals in the body.
TIP 3: Take probiotics every day – We love Life-Space’s Probiotic Powder for Children and pop it on their brekky in the morning when one of them shows signs of either having an upset tummy, constipation or diarrhoea, a sniffly nose, or if they’ve had to have antibiotics.
TIP 4: Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables – I’m a huge believer that plant based foods have so much healing power that we often have a fruit and veggie smoothie or juice for an after school “treat”. Just pack it full of berries and they don’t even know the carrot, kale or celery was snuck in!
TIP 5: At the first sign of a cold give them Sambucol Kids Cold & Flu Liquid – it features black elderberry fruit too with added Vitamin C and Zinc and, like the gummies, it supports the immune system too and is pumped full of antioxidants. Kids love the taste and it’s suitable for children 2 years and older. There’s also adult Sambucol Cold and Flu too!
TIP 6: As soon as you pick them up, whip out the hand sanitiser! I am highly aware that I sound like a germaphobe but all the nurses/doctors I know, say you really can avoid an outbreak of illness with the miracle hand sanitiser so I’ll take that advice and I’ll run with it!!!
Meantime, as well as vowing to keep my family safe, happy and healthy this year, my other 2019 New Years Resolution is to not worry so much about the “what if’s” and just go with the flow… Hmmmm….
