So it might sound like utter BS, but I’m going to share a little health remedy with you, that will make you feel and look better and EVERYONE can do it!
A friend once told me how great she was feeling simply because she started the day with a nice cup of hot water…what the? Yep that’s it! She boiled the kettle, filled her cup and away she went to start the day free of nasties.
Then last year, when I gave Sarah Wilson’s I Quit Sugar 8 Week Program a go, Sarah too talked about the benefits to a cup of hot water first thing in the morning, only she added a squeeze of lemon to help alkalize the body.
Something my mum had been telling me to do for years but I hadn’t listened of course. Until now.
I’ve started doing it too – waking up, turning on the kettle and filling my mug with hot water and a few lemon slices. And, OH MY GOSH, I have seen the amazing benefits! The biggest one being that I now have regular morning bowel movements (which is always a plus if your a woman, right?)!
So, I thought I would share this little wellness tip with you all in hope that you will give hot lemon water a go too (just note, though, I haven’t replaced my morning cup of coffee with this, I just have coffee after my breakfast instead, the lemon water is the first thing I have in the morning).
Here are some of the benefits to starting off the day with this easy wonder brew;
*It gets the poo moving. A hot lemon drink flushes out unwanted waste and toxins from your body by acting as a diuretic. It activates the the production of acids required for digestion, all of which seem to get the system moving. Apparently there is science behind this, something to do with lemons being high in minerals and vitamins which help loosen nasty stuff in the digestive tract. Whatever the reason, I certainly feel some movement after I’ve had my cup in the morning!
BYE BYE BLOATING
*It helps with bloating, indigestion, heartburn and burping. Same reasons as above. It’s awful starting the day with a belly full of air when you haven’t even had anything to eat yet. I find the hot water really helps get rid of this problem and any indigestion that surfaces as you rise.
*It clears your skin. Yep, the vitamin C part of the drink, as well as the other antioxidants you get from citrus, is known to help decrease wrinkles and blemishes, including acne! Um, hello! It’s actually cleansing me from the inside out? Awesome!
*It acts as a detox. Not only does it help with the toilet antics we have already mentioned, it also helps flush out toxins in your urine too and helps keep your urinary tract in tact baby! The citric acid in lemons helps maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.
WEIGHT THERE’S MORE
*It aids in weight Loss. Hello! Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. Studies have shown people who maintain a more alkaline diet, do in fact lose weight faster. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that you are starting the day with something so pure and fresh that it creates a pattern for the rest of the day?
NO MORE COUGHIN’
*It boosts your immune system. We all know vitamin C is great for fighting colds but did you know they are also high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) found in lemons demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects, and is used as complementary support for asthma and other respiratory symptoms plus it enhances iron absorption in the body; iron plays an important role in immune function. Lemons also contain saponins, which show antimicrobial properties that may help keep cold and flu at bay.
*Energises and enhances your mood. Goodness knows we mums all need a mood booster in the morning at times, especially after a rough night with the kids or a snoring hubby next to you (or in my case both). The scent of lemon has mood enhancing and energizing properties. The smell of lemon juice can brighten your mood and help clear your mind. Lemon can also help reduce anxiety and depression.
EYE CAN FEEL IT
*It helps maintain the health of the eyes and helps fight against eye problems.
HEAL THE BENEFITS
*Lemon promotes healing. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), found in abundance in lemons, promotes wound healing, and is an essential nutrient in the maintenance of healthy bones, connective tissue, and cartilage.
*It freshens breath. Now this is a major plus for me (not saying I have bad breath, but I am always conscious that I might). I always feel sorry for people who have bad breath because I’m sure they wouldn’t have the faintest idea they do unless someone tells them. So here you go people, now’s your chance, offer someone a hot lemon drink to help fix the problem! Besides fresher breath, lemons have been known to help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. But be aware that citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so do not brush your teeth just after drinking your lemon water.
Give it a try for a couple of weeks and see how you feel! Oh and please let us know, we would love to hear if you felt a difference.
