OK, I have a confession…. we are a little bit obsessed with Christmas lights in this family…OK, OK… A LOT obsessed!
It started around 4 years ago…
It was Boxing Day and we noticed quite a few Christmas lights were on sale for a really, really good price. I’m talking Kmart cheap minus another 50% off price!
So, we grabbed a few boxes and put them away in the roof with the rest of the Christmas decorations. Out they came the following year and carefully hung on the outside of the house…wow, they were…twinkling, mesmerising, MAGICAL! We needed more! more! more!
Well, the rest is history… and now, every December, my husband acquires the nickname “Mr Griswold”.
“Mr Griswold” regularly searches eBay and Gumtree for those mid year bargains, he’s out the back in the middle of November charging his solar lights and he has even been known to leave a list for the babysitter on where to find all the switches to turn the lights on once it gets dark… no list about how to care for the kids though!
Over the years he has bought light up reindeers for the roof, twinkling trees to line the driveway, flashing lights for the fence, neon signs for the carport and blow up santas to bob merrily in the breeze.
He eagerly awaits the 1st of December when he can switch on, stand back and admire his handy work (with all the other men in the street proudly patting him on the back for a “job well done”) The whole thing is hilarious yet endearing at the same time…
I must admit though, I do love it when I hear cars pulling up out the front with their windows wound down, excited squeals of little kids pointing out the flashing reindeer and blow up Santa. It kind of makes having to squeeze through the manhole in the roof to reach the Christmas light boxes which are stored in every spare crevas that the possum hasn’t inhabited worth it.
