Mornington is such a great place to spend a summers afternoon with the fam.
My brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece are currently visiting from WA so yesterday, we decided to load all the kids (and Pops!) into the car and take an afternoon drive down to Mornington for some rock pooling and ice-cream.
When we arrived we drove all the way down to the end of Main Street and parked parallel to the playground.
If you walk down the road from the park toward The Rocks Restaurant and the Mornington Pier, you will find the entrance to the ocean side of the beach about half way down on the left. Before we left we checked the tide times so we knew that we would be able to access the rocks.
The views down there are stunning and the rocks are somewhat mystical with their perfectly formed jagginess surrounded by seaweed and little hidden treasures.
We very carefully walked down the path to the rocks and began hunting for little crabs which were so easy to find under the small, lift-able rocks. The kids had a ball finding them and it became a little competition to see who could spot the most before they scurried away!
Note – This isn’t the easiest of access points and I wouldn’t recommend going down there by yourself with small children. I recommend one adult per child so little hands can be held whilst walking on the rocks.
After having some fun in the rock pools we took a short stroll up Main Street to Yummo – ice-cream & lolly shop who serve the most delicious ice-cream flavours. Mama’s choice – salted caramel!
After the ice-creams, back down Main Street we went to finish off the afternoon with a play on the playground (secretly envying the child free couple sipping cocktails in Brass Razoo on my way past!)
I love the Mornington playground. The play equipment is suitable for all ages, there are lots of shady spots for picnics and a huge green playing field perfect for football, soccer or cricket. We opted for the latter option, the boys playing cricket while us girls had a play in the park.
Stella loved the swings and the slide while my niece Roxy loved the flying fox and climbing the surrounding trees!
Mornington, you’re an old fave with this Mama and of course, I’ll be back.
Maybe next time though it will be for a child free, date night…hint hint wink wink hubby!
